Pastor Lavina Johnson Smith is the youngest of eight children born in Williston, South Carolina. She attended school until the fourth grade in South Carolina upon moving to Chester, Pennsylvania, where she continued her education in the Chester Schools graduating from Chester High School in June 1968.  Pastor Smith has studied for over twenty eight years as the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, completing all classes for Christian Education and graduating with Family and Marriage

    What are HBCUs?

    Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions that were established prior to 1964 with the principal mission of educating Black Americans.

    HBCUs have produced 40 percent of all Black engineers and 50 percent of all Black lawyers in America. Seventy percent of Black doctors in our country attended an HBCU, and 80 percent of Black judges are alumni of these schools.

    Teach For America (TFA) is an American nonprofit organization whose stated mission is to "enlist, develop, and mobilize as many as possible of our nation's most promising future leaders to grow and strengthen the movement for educational excellence.

    The organization aims to accomplish this by recruiting and selecting college graduates from top universities to serve as teachers. The corps members, commit to teaching for at least two years in a traditional public or public charter K–12 school.
